Practical Tips For Downsizing

Empty nesters? Tired of cleaning a big house? Or just looking for a change of scenery? Before you downsize, be sure to take a close look at your belongings as well as your new surroundings. Take measurements, determine whether or not you are able to fit your possessions, and commit to keeping only what is strictly necessary, and disposing of what is not.

WHEN PACKING...

Give yourself lots of time to go through everything you own, and brace yourself for the fact that you won't be able to take everything with you. Go room by room, and try not to spend too much time going down memory lane, otherwise you'll find yourself scrambling to finish packing. It may also speed things up if you recruit extra help in sorting through everything. Go through your knick-knacks and "little treasures", try to get rid of as much as you can by giving them away to family or friends you know will appreciate them as much as you do.

TO TOSS OR NOT TO TOSS...

When sorting through your stuff ask yourself these 2 questions: "When's the last time I actually used this"? If the answer is more than a year ago, toss it. "Will my life change if I don't have this item in it?" More often than not, the answer to this question is no, so toss it. If something is broken, toss it. If something is torn, moth eaten, damaged or in any other way irreparable, toss it. Of course many things can either be donated to charity, recycled or sold at a garage sale, so keep this in mind as well.

YOUR OPTIONS

- Before moving all that living room furniture, consider bringing only the one big couch, or try opting for a smaller love seat with a couple of club chairs, which are easy to move into a corner, or even another room when not in use.

- In your spare room or second bedroom, consider a sofa-bed or murphy bed. This will allow you to create a TV room, hobby room or home office by bringing in a computer desk (on wheels) or an extra bookcase.

- If you're looking for more room in your kitchen, use a drop leaf table and stackable or foldable chairs.

- Keep all of your papers in a portable file tote. This way you can bring it to the table to do some paperwork then hide it back in the closet when you're done. Minimize the amount of papers you have by being consistent about what needs to be kept and what doesn't.

- Use bright and light colors for your textiles as well as your paint, this will make your rooms look bigger. Another room-enlarging trick is mirrors; place them in hallways and tight spaces to make the room look more open.

- Think big, vertically; get taller bookcases or install floor-to-ceiling shelving, and use pretty boxes or baskets for smaller items or papers.

- Solve the "tiny bathroom" dilemma by installing a shelf just above the door where you can place your extra towels, soaps, lotions, etc.

- Install door mounted shelving on the backs of doors to create a cleaning supply center, an ironing station or a hobby area.

Remember that you are moving into a new place, this should be an uplifting and enriching experience, reducing the amount of clutter filling up your life can be therapeutic. Just because you're downsizing, it doesn't mean that you won't have the things you love, it just means that you'll have less of them. This is a great time for you to be focusing on what truly matters in your life, and letting go of the rest.

QUICK TIP: Now that everything is being properly placed on shelves, bookcases and ledges be sure to purchase either a step stool or a foldable step ladder.
