Office Moving Tips

Corporate or office moving or any office furniture removal can be very stressful, and very little control may be given to employees and their families, if they are moving out of town. Usually there are specific guidelines that companies and corporations will give employees and these should be followed to the letter.

Childrens Bookcases And Shelves

Here are some general tips to help the office moving process go smoothly.

Childrens Bookcases And Shelves

3 Months before the Move

Prepare for the move 3 months ahead of time as it is unfamiliar territory for most people.
Remember that companies and corporations continue to operate even during a move.
Spend only the necessary amount of time planning and preparing for the move.
Become familiar with the new offices and location.
Measure all rooms that are going to be used in the new location.
Note the rooms' shapes and new furniture.
Create a floor plan for personal office space and how new or current office items will fit into it - filing cabinets, chairs, desks, etc.
Include anything that is brought to the new location, plants, furniture, equipment and other employee locations.
Supply each employee with a plan copy.
Post a plan copy in the current and new buildings for the move.

1 Month before the Move

Internal notifications with the plan copy and moving details should be sent to all employees, movers, landlords, renters, etc.
Make movers aware of location for each piece of furniture.
Ensure that movers are aware of which furniture, such as desks, belong to which employees.
Label furniture for each floor with coloured labels and number them according to the specific employee that they belong to. Also do this with all equipment.
Ensure that all labels are visible.

Moving Day

Ensure supervisors instruct employees properly on moving day using these instructions.
Ensure each employee in each department has a copy of these tips and then they can return to work quickly with the least amount of delay.
Ensure each employee packs their own personal items prior to the move, following these tips.

Moved Items

Remove and pack into secure boxes all things contained in cupboards, wall units, desks, shelves and bookcases.
Do not empty filing cabinets, but secure them with a lock, thick packing tape or string.
Pack all personal things such as possessions, plants, pictures, fountain pens, lighters, money, legal documents and other items in secure boxes and move them personally. If special containers or boxes are required, ask the mover.
Empty desks and pack contents in secured boxes, including books, letter holders/trays, current work documents and other items, but ensure all loose materials, pencils, pens and paper clips are secured in sealed envelopes first. Use stuffing or paper to protect all glass items before packing.
Lock all security files prior to the move. If special regulations require specialize escorts then inform the moving consultant to make special arrangements to consolidate the files with the movers.
Empty storage and supply cabinets, locking or tying the doors securely shut. Pack all items into secure and sealed boxes.

Furniture/Equipment/Other Items for Discarding

Label all furniture, equipment or other items that are being thrown out or discarded with 'Do Not Move', to save additional expenses.
Garbage Disposal/Removal

Ensure all garbage is discarded prior to the moving day. Arrange for industrial sized dumpsters through local town or city halls to be put in front of the office building for the disposal of excess garbage. Throw away any unnecessary items to avoid hauling unneeded things, but double check that the items being discarded are not important.

Above Street Level Floor Access

Examine each floor of the office building to locate elevators and ensure they are working properly and are big enough for furniture moves prior to the move. If elevators are unfit or there are none then give ample warning to the movers so they can prepare.

Electrical Machines Moves

Ensure that the movement of machine technology is done by someone who knows what they are doing as some machines require special handling. With rented equipment, notify the rental agency or company prior to the move.

Disconnect computers and dismantle them properly.

Ensure each employee is familiar with how to take their equipment apart.

Drain all photocopying machines of liquids, and secure loose parts securely or remove them and transport them in separate sealed boxes.

Empty vending machines and water dispensers, and ensure they are dismantled properly.

The Leave Nothing Behind Checklist

Are desks empty?
Has each supply cabinet been cleared?
Has each filing cabinet been cleared?
Has each file drawer been locked?
Has each wall item been taken down?
Has each breakable item been packed properly?
Has each computer and other machine been disconnected?
Have all 'Do Not Move' tags been properly placed?
Has each piece of equipment been drained of liquids?
Has each chair and chair pad been labelled?
Have spare sets of keys been made available?
Has the Internet connection been set up for immediate use in the new office?
Have phone and fax lines been set up for immediate use in the new office?
Are all fax machines and phones working?
Has the electricity been connected in the new office and does it work?
Do all new office bathrooms work?
Has all old office stationary with the old office address been scrapped and new ones made (new address)?

How to Organize Your Kid's Art & Toys and Create the Playroom of Your Dreams

Do you dream of a playroom that you can walk through and the kids can easily keep neat? If you are ready to turn down the volume and keep toys & art supplies from turning into clutter, here are 9 neat ideas to get you started.

Childrens Bookcases And Shelves

Sort Everything. Collect everything in one place. Group items "like with like" such as Dolls, Purses, Train sets, Small Toys, Toys that Require Supervision, etc. Assess how much you have before thinking about the solution. As you sort, set aside a container for toys with missing items. As you sort and find the missing pieces, put them in the container too. When you have all the pieces, you can give the complete toy, game or art kit a permanent home.
Set Limits. Determine how much of everything is a reasonable amount to keep. Do they really need 72 stuffed animals? Perhaps 10-20 is a reasonable limit. Remember, kids actually get overwhelmed when they have too much stuff. They take far better care of their things and enjoy them more when they have fewer of them.
Conduct a Treasure Hunt. Have your child pick his or her favorites according to the limits you have set. Set aside the rest to donate. Let them know that the rest will be going to kids who don't have as much. You might even want to spend quality time with your child writing a note to the kids who might receive the toys.
Assign Homes & Containers. Now that you know what you have and have a reasonable amount, store smaller items in containers by category and label each container. TIP: Put pictures on the containers so that your child knows where to put things away. Let your child help by choosing pictures and applying them. This is a fun way to involve your child in learning organizational skills. For larger items such as big trucks, assign a "parking spot" on a shelf or on the floor.
Make Things Easy to Access and Easy to Put Away. Store frequently used items that children can use without supervision on lower shelves that they can access. Use containers without lids for frequently accessed items. Lids are difficult for children to use and discourage them from using the storage solution. Separate arts and crafts supplies in square or rectangular bins for easy stacking and to maximize use of storage. Be Safe. Store items requiring supervision either out of reach or locked. For example, if you have really young children, you probably want them to ask you to get down crayons, paints etc. If you use tall shelving, anchor them to the wall so they can't fall over. Store heavy items on the bottom shelves.
Teach the Kids How Put Everything Away. Kids don't always know what to do when you tell them to put stuff away. Take the time to teach your kids how to organize. Explain to them that organizing their toys will make it easy to find them later and prevent them from losing toys. Once you have a system in place, practice using the system with them for several days in a row. Help them put away toys and find them by making a game out of it, such as conducting a "treasure hunt". Ask them to find things, or to put away several different items in their new locations. For example, "Where are your favorite talking toys?" "Where does this stuffed animal go when you are done playing with it?" Give lots of praise for correct answers.
Be Creative. Containers don't have to be expensive. You can use plastic containers, or even empty tissue boxes. You can even turn decorating containers for art supplies into an art project.
Maintain. Once you have pared toys down to a reasonable number and given each toy a home, you need to keep the amount of toys you have under control. Going forward, maintain the limits you've set by adopting a "Give to Get" policy. So, whenever your child gets a new toy, have them pick one to donate. This is a great way to teach your child the joy of giving. Set up a monthly donation pick up or drop off with your favorite charity and you'll never have to do a big purge again.

Developing Reading Skills In Your Child

A lot of teaching your child to read is first instilling in your child a desire to read. It's so very important for the child to know that reading activities and learning to read is fun. Early on, for instance, if you haven't yet, set aside an area of your home where your child can have their very own reading area and little person library. This will get most all your reading activities off to a great start. Having their own special place for reading activities will encourage the child to spend time reading.

Childrens Bookcases And Shelves

Encourage them to begin to find their favorite spot within their area for their reading activities. Grab yourself a comfy chair and join them and you'll be amazed how much your child will want go into their reading area and have you with them for a reading session. And an added bonus to the reading area is a great place and time for you to spend with your child reading to them and vise versa. Reading is nothing more than a practiced skill. Practicing being the operative word. Instilling good reading habits in your child early on with consistent and daily reading and practice sessions is laying the bricks to a solid learning foundation no matter what the subject matter.

Childrens Bookcases And Shelves

Books from bookstores, garage sales, flea markets and such are a great way to begin building your child's reading library content. Grab a cardboard box, and old milk crate or two and decorate them with your child so they can have their own library and take pride in how it looks and help them organize their reading materials. If you already have bookcases, then clear of one of the shelves and make that special place for your child's books. It's fun to do and your kids will have fun too. Build momentum early with how much fun reading and exploring books can be.

Also make good use of your public library. Teaching reading skills begins with developing in your child an interest and love for reading. As your child's library grows along with their reading skill they will understand that books are important, enjoyable, and always filled with new things to learn.

A good reading activity can involve very little actual reading. Use picture books with very few or no words and ask your child to describe the picture or tell a story about what the picture is about. This will allow you to monitor the child's vocabulary and the use of the words they have been learning. Don't overlook the importance of vocabulary building along with building reading skills. A strong vocabulary goes well with understanding what you're reading which, in turn, keeps the frustration level down, and the fun factor up.

Encouraging your child to verbalize to you a story or even a couple pages of something they have read about gives them great pride (while you listen for accuracy) and makes them feel like a reader! And when kids feel good about their reading skills they naturally strive to learn more.
