The Most Common Woods Used For Woodworking

You might have some questioning concerning the kind of wood you should be using to build your woodworking project. There are different aspects to consider before deciding on a specific type of wood such as: your personal style, the ambiance you would like to create, and your current finances. Following is a list of the most favored woods used to build wooden furniture.

Childrens Bookcases And Shelves

Pine

Childrens Bookcases And Shelves

Pine wood is definitely the most popular wood used with regard to cost effective furniture. Woodworkers like it because of its light shade and natural texture and because it is cheaper compared to other kinds of woods. Pine is very flexible, soft, and easy to work with. Use it to build bookcases and shelves, bed frames and cradles, tables and chairs, storage units, chests, and numerous other pieces made for daily use. Even though pine does not last as long as harder woods, it is frequently used to provide a traditional look to any area. Pine can be stained, left natural, or painted after sanding.

Oak

Oak is another common choice for furniture building. It has great strength and hardness and is prized in the construction of fine furniture, flooring and for veneer production. You will find two standard kinds of oak wood: red and white. Oak wood home furniture is long lasting which makes it the ideal choice for kid bedrooms, flooring, and various areas of the house. Additionally, it is reasonably priced.

Walnut

Walnut is a hard, dense, tight grained and resilient type of wood. It can be polished to a smooth finish and it holds a stain pretty well. It is a highly prized wood by cabinet, musical instrument, and gun makers. It can be cut into thin slices for veneers. Walnut wood is often used to make small pieces like bowls or candle holders simply because it reacts very well to wood turning. Its cost makes it interesting to cost-conscious customers. Because walnut wood can cause allergies and asthma, anyone working with this kind of wood is advised to always wear gloves and a dust mask.

Mahogany

Mahogany is famous for its distinctive pink coloring, which evolves into a deep red-brownish as the wood grows older. This type of wood is among the most valuable wood varieties in the world. This wood offers very few knots or voids which grants the wood a gentle, even grain appearance that is ideally suited for fine wood furnishings and wood craft. The mahogany wood tree grows very large which allows the manufacturing of large and continuous boards. Woodworkers will use this type of wood to build tables, desks, and other furniture without joints. It is also easy to work with, is strong and durable, easy to sand, creates clean cuts and is easy to turn on a wood lathe. Unfortunately, it is highly priced but considering that mahogany furniture can last a lifetime, it is well worth the expense.

Given that you have found out about the most common choices in wood furniture, you are ready to choose new furniture or to build it yourself. Select a wood that matches your price range and style. Do not forget to get high quality woodworking plans for any woodworking project you might want to construct.

    Practical Tips For Downsizing

Empty nesters? Tired of cleaning a big house? Or just looking for a change of scenery? Before you downsize, be sure to take a close look at your belongings as well as your new surroundings. Take measurements, determine whether or not you are able to fit your possessions, and commit to keeping only what is strictly necessary, and disposing of what is not.

    Childrens Bookcases And Shelves

    WHEN PACKING...

    Childrens Bookcases And Shelves

Give yourself lots of time to go through everything you own, and brace yourself for the fact that you won't be able to take everything with you. Go room by room, and try not to spend too much time going down memory lane, otherwise you'll find yourself scrambling to finish packing. It may also speed things up if you recruit extra help in sorting through everything. Go through your knick-knacks and "little treasures", try to get rid of as much as you can by giving them away to family or friends you know will appreciate them as much as you do.

TO TOSS OR NOT TO TOSS...

When sorting through your stuff ask yourself these 2 questions: "When's the last time I actually used this"? If the answer is more than a year ago, toss it. "Will my life change if I don't have this item in it?" More often than not, the answer to this question is no, so toss it. If something is broken, toss it. If something is torn, moth eaten, damaged or in any other way irreparable, toss it. Of course many things can either be donated to charity, recycled or sold at a garage sale, so keep this in mind as well.

    YOUR OPTIONS

    - Before moving all that living room furniture, consider bringing only the one big couch, or try opting for a smaller love seat with a couple of club chairs, which are easy to move into a corner, or even another room when not in use.

    - In your spare room or second bedroom, consider a sofa-bed or murphy bed. This will allow you to create a TV room, hobby room or home office by bringing in a computer desk (on wheels) or an extra bookcase.

    - If you're looking for more room in your kitchen, use a drop leaf table and stackable or foldable chairs.

    - Keep all of your papers in a portable file tote. This way you can bring it to the table to do some paperwork then hide it back in the closet when you're done. Minimize the amount of papers you have by being consistent about what needs to be kept and what doesn't.

    - Use bright and light colors for your textiles as well as your paint, this will make your rooms look bigger. Another room-enlarging trick is mirrors; place them in hallways and tight spaces to make the room look more open.

    - Think big, vertically; get taller bookcases or install floor-to-ceiling shelving, and use pretty boxes or baskets for smaller items or papers.

    - Solve the "tiny bathroom" dilemma by installing a shelf just above the door where you can place your extra towels, soaps, lotions, etc.

    - Install door mounted shelving on the backs of doors to create a cleaning supply center, an ironing station or a hobby area.

Remember that you are moving into a new place, this should be an uplifting and enriching experience, reducing the amount of clutter filling up your life can be therapeutic. Just because you're downsizing, it doesn't mean that you won't have the things you love, it just means that you'll have less of them. This is a great time for you to be focusing on what truly matters in your life, and letting go of the rest.

QUICK TIP: Now that everything is being properly placed on shelves, bookcases and ledges be sure to purchase either a step stool or a foldable step ladder.

Little fingers find their way into all manner of places. Drawers, cupboards, book shelves. The list is endless. In addition to this strong sense of curiosity, those just learning to walk often pull themselves up by a bookshelf or other piece of furniture. Without the toddler's knowledge, the bookcase they depended upon now threatens to topple over on them.

    Childrens Bookcases And Shelves

Locks and Latches Protect Babies and Toddlers

    Childrens Bookcases And Shelves

So, go through the house to count the number of drawers and cupboard doors are in each room. Then begin to fit each one with the appropriate latch mechanism. Doors that you use less frequently can be fitted with keyed locks. These have special value where alcohol and gun storage are concerned. Separate lockboxes can be purchased for pistols and ammunition. Gun cases made for rifles and shotguns have keyed locks as well.

Don't forget refrigerators, freezers and toilets. The toilet latch, most importantly, prevents a potential drowning. It secondarily keeps a child from depositing toys and other things in that handy spot. A toddler can crawl inside a refrigerator or freezer, close the door and then not be able to get out. If you have an old, ujnused unit around the home, properly dispose of it. Too many children have suffocated because they couldn't get out of a discarded refrigerator.

    Furniture Restraints

Now take a look at china cabinets, bookcases and tall, free-standing chests or closets. Anything that is taller and could topple over is a potential candidate for a furniture restraint. Because toddlers are so small, your list might include end tables and the like as well. They have to be close to a wall though. Restraining devices work by fastening one end of the bracket into the piece of furniture and the other end into the studs in the wall. Once both ends are secured, it takes a lot of force to cause a cabinet to topple.

Speaking of toppling, this is the same control used to prevent furniture from falling over during an earthquake. Thus, if you live in earthquake country, this is a procedure you should be using anyway. Again, it is critical that the wall side of the bracket be screwed or lagged to the stud. Except for extremely severe quakes, the moving earth may rattle the bookcase a bit, but it won't topple over on someone. If it's only fastened to the plaster board, it will pop free in a minute.

Securing cabinet and appliance doors and drawers will keep little guys out of trouble, at least this kind of trouble anyway, and out of harm's way. Attaching a bookcases and china cabinets to wall studs prevents them from tipping over on a child.

9 Great Ways to Make the Most Out of Your Attic Space

Renovating an attic means you can add lots of useful space to your home. Normally, attics are full of junk from ages ago; there is no better time than now to think of a better way to use such valuable space within your home.

    Childrens Bookcases And Shelves

Attics are not meant to be dirty, dark, and moldy. Very much the contrary, they should be modern, cozy, bright and beautifully designed spaces that bring value to your home and life.

    Childrens Bookcases And Shelves

One of the challenging situations attics present is the low ceiling that limits its use. However, a professional interior designer knows the clever design principles and the best remodeling strategies to take 100% advantage of these difficult areas in a practical and beautiful way.

Here are 9 great ways to take full advantage of your attic space and to enjoy it as much as you enjoy the rest of your home:

    1. Storage area

Use the space along the attic's walls as storage area, using shelves, drawers, niches, or cupboards. In this way you add value to your home, you keep the place organized and free of clutter, keep people away from low ceiling areas, don't need standing dressers and bookcases, and maximize the use of dead zone areas.

    2. Change the stairs

Very often, the stairs to the attic are built to use a lot of the attic's floor space that you could put to better use. In order to solve this, you can locate the stairs on the low roof side by breaking the stairs up with two half flights and a landing, by working with the roof line's slope by having stairs that go down to a landing before changing direction, or by adding a skylight to the stairwell.

    3. Place furniture

You can put furniture under low ceiling areas to maximize their use. Locate the head of the bed there, a couch or chair, a dresser, desk, bookcase, or entertainment unit.

    4. Skylights

These add lots of light to dark attics and are easy to install. Skylights on sloped roofs give the sensation of more vertical space in the room. They go great in bathrooms above sinks, in built-in bathroom shower stalls, above built-in bed or desk niches, in kitchens, main living areas, and stairwells.

    5. Reflect light

Walls, ceiling, floor, and objects in the room can absorb or reflect light. Light colors on walls and ceiling next to the windows help natural light flow throughout the space. Paint ceilings and walls white, use hardwood floors or light carpets, and use mirrors and other reflective surfaces to produce the feeling of a larger space.

    6. Add enough lighting

If your attic is a little dark, think about the kind of lighting that will light it up, perhaps, overhead lighting, lamps, wall lighting, or task lighting.

    7. Dormers

These add natural light and usable space, add height to bathrooms, kitchens, seating areas, and niches for desks. Dormers will help you gain more space in the middle of the attic to improve movement and circulation.

    8. Windows

Add natural light and open up the space. Choose wide or tall windows, or both, to allow light to penetrate deep into the attic.

    9. Build a bathroom

A small bathroom in the attic is a great way to use low spaces. Use the low roof side to put the toilet, the sink, or the shower. You can add a skylight over the sink for more light, a bench along the shower wall, or a skylight over the shower to add more headroom.

Contact a local Seattle interior design firm to find out your attic's potential. They can give you a good idea of what kind of work your space needs and how to make it fit your budget.

Essential Guide to Creating a Child's Bedroom

Whether you're preparing your first nursery or trying to turn a children's den into a teenage living space, we've got some great ideas and expert advice to help you create the perfect children's room without breaking the bank.

    Childrens Bookcases And Shelves

From a baby's first nursery to a teenager's bedroom, decorating a room for your children can be a tricky look to get right, but there are a few basic rules to follow to get it right.

    Childrens Bookcases And Shelves

    Ideas for a nursery

When you plan a room for a newborn, bear in mind that decorating a nursery can be as much about creating a comfortable space for you as for your child.

    Decoration

Calm and comfort are all-important for newborns, so choose delicate shades and tactile fabrics for cosiness. Add a pretty mobile above the cot but make sure they are hung high enough to be out of reach when your child is old enough to stand.

    Furniture

Rather than furniture specifically designed with babies in mind, choose well-made items that can adapt with your child. For example, a chest of drawers can be topped with a mat to make a changing table, and a two-in-one cot bed will last until your baby is ready for a grown-up bed.

    Window treatments

Blackout blinds are a good choice for babies' rooms. They make it much easier to settle small children during the day or on light evenings and should help stop them waking up at dawn in the summer months. Roller blinds also allow you to let in as much natural light as possible at other times.

    Temperature

To avoid your baby becoming too hot or cold, don't position their cot right next to a window or by a radiator. It may also be a good idea to invest in a room thermometer and try to keep the room at around 18°C.

    Ideas For a toddlers bedroom

As they grow, energetic toddlers will need a place for supervised play, as well as a secure and cozy bed to encourage them to snuggle down alone at night.

    Decorating

Children grow out of the latest fads as quickly as their first pair of shoes, so rather than succumbing to an entire room of Dora the Explorer, choose a neutral backdrop and introduce colour with textiles, graphic wall stickers and fun accessories. A feature wall in a bright and lively wallpaper is also an easy way to change a nursery into bedroom.

    Furniture

Opt for a wardrobe with a pole that can be raised as they grow older. Secure free-standing furniture by fixing it to the wall with anti-toppling devices such as straps or fixing brackets. Open drawers can be used to climb, so use child-proof drawer latches on lower drawers.

    Storage

Store toys in a variety of containers, according to their size. Combine see-through plastic storage crates, trunks and toy boxes with tubs, baskets, over-door organisers and mini-drawers. Categorise things so that they make sense to your child and arrange them so that they're easy to take out and put away.

    Lighting

Dimmer switches are a boon for checking on a sleeping toddler and can be left on low for an infant who's afraid of the dark. A glowing lamp or nightlight is also a good idea, but make to keep it out of reach.

    Safety

Cover electrical sockets and keep trailing cords out of reach. Childproof the windows with latches that will allow the window to open no more than four inches and keep window areas clear of furniture so that children aren't tempted to climb onto them to reach windows.

    Ideas for older children's bedrooms

Older children will relish having some input in the way their bedroom looks and will hanker after their own den for games and sleepovers with friends.

    Decorating

Use their favourite colours, textures and motifs in a way that suits your home - If bubblegum pink and electric blue go against all your interior style principles, compromise with powder pink or dove grey. Instead of dousing whole walls in vivid colours, add accents with soft furnishings and framed pictures, which can be easily and cheaply updated.

    Furniture

Have a spare bed ready for sleepovers. If space is limited opt for a hideaway bed with a pull-out truckle underneath for when friends come to stay. The White Company has stylish designs.

    Storage

Adjustable shelves can accommodate big picture books for small kids, then be adapted for paperbacks as well as CDs and DVDs. Make use of wasted hanging space inside a standard wardrobe by fixing up a two-tier system of rails or fill the space at the bottom of the wardrobe with small plastic baskets for storing underwear, socks, nightwear and smaller items.

    Lighting

Fairy lights are an easy way to add a magical touch - string twinkling lights round a mirror for a little girl, or pin up a net of lights to create a personal cosmos for a budding spaceman.

    Finishing touches

Murals and wall stickers can create a fun focal point in a kid's room. Help them to personalise their space in a shared bedroom by spelling out their names with funky lettering so that they each have their own dedicated area

    Ideas for teenagers bedrooms

A teenager's bedroom is a place to study, socialise and sleep. Use spots of bright colour and clever storage to ceate a multi-functional space that meets all their needs.

    Decoration

Find the middle ground when you're choosing a colour scheme so that you end up with a look that you can both live with. Instead of all-black walls to ceiling, why not compromise with a single painted feature wall so that they still get their colour fix?

    Storage

The key to getting a teen to put anything away is to make sure that it is easily accesible. Hang bulky items like guitars, skateboard helmets and backpacks on heavy duty wall hooks , add clear containers to bookcases to give at-a-glance storage for folded clothes and fix a brightly coloured peg board to the inside of a wardrobe for accessories, jewellery, belts, scarves, bags, sunglasses, etc.

    Furniture

Create a dedicated spot where teens can study in peace. Choose a desk big enough to write comfortably and pack in extra space for books and notes with wall-mounted shelving above the workspace. Invest in an adult-size wardrobe and chest of drawers to accommodate a growing collection of clothes.

    Style extra

Make a chill-out corner with beanbags, stacks of cushions and low-level seating to keep your living room teenager-free.

    Make it personal

Let your children put their own stamp on the decorating scheme and they'll be more likely to take care of it.

    Get storage sorted

Keep bedrooms tidy by making sure there's a place for everything.

    Get serious about safety

From baby-proofing your nursery to ground rules for teens, basic safety measures can keep kids safe from harm.

    Use the space wisely

Create zones for sleeping, work and play with functional furniture and fun accessories.

    Planning

Planning a decorating project will save you time, money and effort and produce professional looking results.

    Paint, wallpaper and fabric calculators

Work out exactly how much you'll need to complete the job and save money on waste and leftovers

    Colour ideas

Be inspired by three different looks aimed at all ages

    Nursery

Soft-grey walls are the perfect neutral shade for a new baby's room. Warmth can be added with vibrant limes, pinks and blues in stripes and checks, while pale furniture creates a restful feel and keeps the look clutter free.

    Boys

Blues and green's combine to make a striking feature wall and are a good foil for warm, wood furniture and natural flooring. Cheerful motifs on the window treatment add to the sense of fun and create a welcoming look.

    Girls

Pink is the obvious choice for a girl, but to prevent it becoming too sugary use a mix of patterns in vibrant shades of raspberry, red and orange. Temper them with white walls and furniture to keep the look fresh and contemporary.

    Safety guidelines

Keep kids safe and sound with our essential guide to child-proofing your home

Think about bed location. Don't position the bed underneath a window, directly against a radiator or with shelves, ledges or appliances above that a child can get hold of.

Avoid hanging heavy pictures or mirrors above the bed.

Secure free-standing furniture by fixing it to the wall with anti-toppling devices such as straps or fixing brackets.

Avoid open drawers that can be used as a climbing frame - use child-proof latches on lower drawers.

Avoid bunkbeds if your child is under six. Cabin beds are a better option if you can squeeze them in - there'll be plenty of extra storage underneath too.

Use socket covers to keep plug sockets safe from probing fingers.

Secure all dangling lamp cords to prevent injury from pulling on them.

Childproof the windows. Use latches that will let the window open no more than 10cm.

    Living Room Cabinets and Accessories

There are several ways to employ the use of cabinets and storage accessories for your living room. Whether you have an enclosed, smaller den area or a larger than life living space, there are so many options as far as cabinets and storage are concerned. The great thing about living room or den cabinets is that they do not necessarily have to be simply functional. With so many styles on the market, it is easy to find cabinets and cabinet accessories that will transform your living space. Cabinets for the living room can be functional and aesthetic at the same time. You can find the right cabinets to fit the look and style of your living room, ensuring that they will match your furniture and accent the space.

    Childrens Bookcases And Shelves

Classic pieces like antiquated bookcases are a great way to hide clutter. These can come with crown moldings or other accents to stylize your space. Decor pieces such as vases and frames look great on bookcases to tie the room together. Bookcases can have custom shelves placed in them to separate and divide items, such as a smaller space for books, and larger spaces to hold bigger items. Shelving units help to accent bare walls and create perches for small decor items to be displayed.

    Childrens Bookcases And Shelves

Fireplace areas are usually one of the main focal points of a living room. Usually, a mantle rests just above the fireplace that can be used as a functional shelf. If there is no mantle, custom mantles or long shelves can be installed to accent the fireplace area. For fireplaces that have extra wall space around them, decorative custom cabinets can be installed to round out the aesthetic of the fireplace. Slate, marble, or granite can also be incorporated to stylize this area.

Entertainment centers are a significant part of living room areas because of their ability to organize electronic systems in a functional way. These systems can range from being very simple to quite complex, depending on your storage and organizational needs. Entertainment centers can come assembled, or can require self-assembly at home. Some of them have simple divided areas to fit cable boxes, DVD players, or electronic gaming systems. Other entertainment centers are more elaborate, and have a distinct area for a TV, speakers, equipment, and extra storage space.

Movable cabinet and storage units are commonly used in smaller living spaces. Wardrobes are great versatile pieces that can be used to store a variety of products and hide clutter effectively. Curio cabinets are great for storing fine china, antiques, collectibles, and other items that can be displayed behind glass. Glass shelving is ideal for displaying these items, while custom lighting helps to exhibit such dcor in a sophisticated and functional manner.

Entire wall units are popular for living rooms that have complex electronic and wiring systems. Complete wall units organize each electronic piece of equipment, while hiding wires and other connections. Households with home theaters can enjoy the precise organization that wall units offer, allowing the look of the electronic area to be clean, sleek, and sophisticated. There are many options of living room and den cabinet accessories on the market based upon style and function.

Small Home Office Decorating Ideas! Your Guide to Creating the Home Office of Your Dreams

Having only a small space to work with has its disadvantages. However, with a bit of focus and forethought, you can design a home office that is not only practical and functional, but is also conducive to your style and personality. This holds true when accessorizing any room in your home. The only difference being that when you design a small home office you would want to choose space conservative options as it pertains to a work station, shelving, storage and lighting.

    Childrens Bookcases And Shelves

It obviously would not be practical to purchase large bulky pieces of furniture when creating your perfect small home office. The workstation/desk is the centerpiece, focal point, and most used piece of furniture in any home office.

    Childrens Bookcases And Shelves

There are various options to choose from when selecting this important feature. Two of these options include compact and wall-mounted desks. They are both practical for a small home office and each has its pros and cons, which are largely dependent on your unique style and needs.

Compact Desks are wonderfully suited for your small home office if you have ample space for storage furniture such as a file cabinet, bookcase, or an optional room divider.

Wall Desks are ideal if you desire an all-in-one solution that includes space for both your computer system and office supplies.

Designing a Functional Small Home Office

When designing a functional small home office, you would need to consider four essential elements. These include the wall color, lighting, storage and organizational needs of your small home office.

All these factors are important in creating an ideal workflow that would, in turn, increase productivity.

Setting the Mood of Your Small Home Office with Use of Color

The use of color is essential in the functionality of your home office, as it will help to create a particular "mood" as you enter the space. Will you be seeing clients in your home office? Do you want your home office to be warm and inviting? Do you want your home office to blend in with the rest of your home's décor? Do you want your office to be stimulating and conducive to creativity or calm and relaxing?

These are just a few of the questions you need to ask yourself before choosing a wall color for your small home office. It is also important to remember that some colors can make the small space appear even more cramped and may not lend to a spacious feel.

According to behr.com, wall color can lighten the mood and improve productivity in your home office. Here is a run down of colors on the color wheel and what "mood" you can achieve with their use.

Cool Colors - greens, blues and purples are shown to have a calming affect. If you are easily stimulated, it may be helpful to choose a cool wall color to help you relax and "get down to business".
Warm Colors - reds, yellows and oranges give any space a warm, inviting feel. These colors are also invigorating and can help to awaken your creativity. As a word of caution, warm, muted tones should be chosen over bright, bold colors as they tend to be distracting and may not be conducive to productivity.
Whites - perfect to give your small home office an open spacious feel. However, too much white can be straining on the eyes. A wonderful alternative is to use another wall color, but have white as an accent color or for trim and moldings. This would give your small home office a crisp, clean look.
Neutrals - earth tones such as charcoal, umber, ochre and sienna would be ideal if your small home office is open to other rooms within your home. A neutral wall color would blend perfectly with other surrounding color choices. Neutrals are also not considered distracting and would aid in keeping your mind centered on the "business at hand".
Meeting the Lighting Needs of Your Small Home Office

There are three ways to light your home office. These include:

Ambient Lighting Task Lights Accent Lights

All these play a part in striking the right balance between business and pleasure in your small home office.

    Ambient Lighting

Basically, ambient lights provide lighting for the whole room. This can be accomplished through the use of ceiling light fixtures, torchieres and table lamps. Ambient light fixtures are a necessity in any small home office as they account for the majority of illumination in the space.

Those on a budget can afford stylish ambient lighting for their small home office by purchasing torchieres or floor lamps. There are a plethora of lighting accessories to choose from in either a local furniture store or on-line. One such on-line store that provides a wide selection of torchieres, ceiling light fixtures and table lamps is LampsPlus.com.

    Task Lights

Task lights are another home office necessity and provide directional or focused lighting for reading, filling out paper work, working on the computer, etc. Many task lights come with the added feature of an adjustable base that allows you to direct the light where you need it most. These light fixtures help to avoid eyestrain and headaches, thereby, boosting productivity.

    Accent Lights

Unlike ambient and task lights, accent lights are viewed as optional. However, they are useful in adding a decorative element to any space. If you want to showcase a particular object or wall hanging, then accent lights are ideal. The use of accent lights in your small home office may be just what is needed to add a personal touch to your office's décor.

Storage Furniture in Your Small Home Office

As mentioned previously, if you choose a wall desk, it includes space not only for your computer, but additional storage for office supplies. This may alleviate the need for some office furniture. However, you may find that you still need a bookshelf and file cabinet. If your office space doubles as a bedroom or other living area, you may desire to purchase a room divider as well.

Before purchasing additional office furniture, it is important to measure the area to ensure that you buy pieces that accommodate the space in your small home office. This will help to alleviate the hassle of having to return merchandise when you discover that the piece is too large for the space.

You would also want to consider the arrangement of your furniture pieces in your small home office. By placing the pieces in an "L" or "U" shape, all supplies would be in easy reach. Some experts purport that arranging your furniture pieces in this fashion would boost your productivity.

Two options that would provide needed storage are modular bookcases and room dividers that have bookcases built right in. The second option serves two purposes in that it lends both privacy and shelving for office supplies, books, etc.

Bookcases are also designed with adjustable shelves, which accommodate oversized books and supplies and those with doors. Those with doors would add a stylish and personalized touch to your home office's décor.

When deciding on a file cabinet, there are several things you should ask yourself before making a purchase. Some of these include:

Do you work primarily with legal or letter size paper? Some file cabinets only accommodate for one or the other. However, some are available that would provide storage for both.
Is your storage needs more conducive to a vertical or lateral file cabinet?
Will you be filing important documents? If you are, make sure that you inquire specifically if a particular file cabinet of interest is fire resistant.
Do you want to ensure that the file cabinet will not tip over (who doesn't right)? There are file cabinets available with an internal locking system that will only allow you to open one drawer at a time and those equipped with a safety device that would guard against the file cabinet from tipping if several drawers were opened at once.

This may appear to be a lot to consider, but it is best to answer these questions beforehand as it will save you from having to return or exchange items that are not conducive to your small home office needs.

Staying Organized: Essential in Any Small Home Office

One important factor that affects productivity is organization. By storing items you use frequently in an area that is easily assessable would increase what is accomplished each day by decreasing the amount of time it takes to retrieve essentials.

Experts at OnlineOrganizing.com state to have "a world of organizing solutions" and have suggestions on how to organize your home office to promote efficiency. They recommend that the least needed storage files should be furthest away from your workstation in an inactive "work zone" and those items used frequently need to be close at hand.

A simple solution would be to have three different storage zones that include items used frequently, occasionally and rarely.

Storage Zone One - Frequently Used Items

These items need to be easily accessible. One idea would be to place papers you need on a daily basis in a bin on your desk. If you have books that you use each day, consider locating them on a wall-mounted shelf above or near your desk. Another solution would be to designate the shelf in your bookcase that is most easily accessible as the area to place books you use frequently.

Storage Zone Two -- Occasionally Used Items

These are items used from time to time but not on a daily basis. You would want to keep these items in your "work zone", but their accessibility does not need to be at "arms length" as is preferable with items used frequently.

For example, you could store these essentials in a file cabinet under your desk. If you had books you use occasionally, you could store them in the highest shelf, or the one directly above the one that is most easily accessible.

Storage Zone Three - Rarely Used Items These are basically archived files. You could purchase a different cabinet for these files and they would not necessarily need to be in your "work zone".

For books you rarely use, you could designate the lowest shelf in your bookcase for their storage. This would eliminate the need to bend down often, as you would only need to retrieve these books or rare occasions.

Although it only takes seconds to bend or stoop, over a day's time, these seconds add up, therefore, decreasing your overall productivity.

    Designing a Personal Home Office

This is where you can add a few personal touches to your small home office. A few ideas would be:

Include a few family photos or pictures that are relaxing or lift your spirits. If you want to bring a little of the outdoors in, you could incorporate a vase of flowers or a few potted plants for greenery.
Include items in your small home office that reduce stress. This would not only add a personal touch - as these items would be unique to you - but may also boost productivity. Two such items could include a stress ball to squeeze or a small basketball hoop placed along the wall to shoot baskets when things get a little tense.
Include a water element, such as a small water fountain or fish aquarium. This would not only aid in relaxation, but would add a decorative touch to your small home office.
Summary: Creating the Perfect Balance in Your Small Home Office It may not be effortless, but you can create a small home office that is not only professional but also includes elements that are unique to your personality and style in home furnishings.

To sum up, Practicality + Functionality + Personality = a small home office that is both personal and professional.

You also want to ensure that your small home office is conducive to productivity and exudes professionalism. This is especially important if you "entertain" clients and business associates in the space.

However, you don't want to exclude personal touches altogether as this is one of the many advantages to working from home. You are basically your own boss and call the shots per se. Isn't that the allure of working from home in the first place?

It is important to find the perfect balance of business and pleasure without one interfering with the other. If you frequently have clients in your small home office, it may be essential that it retains a professional look and feel and may not allow for too many personal touches. You also wouldn't want your "personal" items to interfere with your workflow and productivity. However, you can still express your style in the furnishings you choose for the space.

These are all points you should consider when creating your small home office. With forethought, you can design a working environment that is not only conducive to productivity, but also expresses your unique style and personality.
